What Makes Tanzanite Geologically Unique

Tanzanite is defined not by beauty alone, but by geography.

Scientifically classified as a blue to violet variety of zoisite, tanzanite forms under a rare combination of heat, pressure, and mineral presence that occurred only once in Earth's history. These conditions exist solely within a narrow corridor of land in northern Tanzania known as the Merelani Hills.

Unlike gemstones found across multiple continents, tanzanite has a single known source. When these deposits are depleted, no new supply is expected. This geological limitation places tanzanite among the rarest gemstones known to science.

In its raw crystal form, tanzanite reveals growth structures, natural terminations, and internal character that are lost during cutting—features highly valued by collectors
